FOD, look at the Raggety link. You've got to face your fear! Tell us more about the penguins.
FOD40UK commented on 07.14.05
No thanx!!*shudder!*..
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
You are right - 1969 was the fish pond cover with the Raggety story!! He does appear elsehwhere in other annuals but I believe this was the first appearance of the little stick like blighter. Check out the link suggested by SS below to scare yourself again FOD!!
FOD40UK commented on 07.14.05
Sorry to butt in to this conversation (9hrs too late) but was Raggety, Ruperts' Stick-like friend with a pointy nose!?If so, I think I got that annual.(He scared the be-jeebus out of me)I got Rupert annuals 2 years running and they always gave me nightmares. If I remember correctly, on one cover Rupert was half-way up a snow covered hill, waving insanely at the artist, with Bill badger puffing up behind. On the other, Rupert is peeking into a pond and apparently conversing with a goldfish sat on a lilly-pad!? (well, it was the late sixties, and hallucinogenic drugs were probably rife!)By year 3, I pleaded and pleaded for Gran to get me a Beano annual instead-which she did for the next 30yrs!!.......I think I'll stick to collecting my penguin figures-much safer....

2004, and I did not know a thing about her, but she looks nice
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
Don't know much about her I am sad to say. Peace prize though I recall? Enjoy.

Wangari Maathai
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
Which book?
wim commented on 07.14.05
I am of to bed too, reading a book about a black woman, nobelprizewinner
Dumplingtje commented on 07.14.05
Goodnight!
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
Goodnight SS and Wim! Sleep tight and don't let Ronnie the Bad Rabbit bite.
wim commented on 07.14.05
actually "bruin" mens "brown, "Bruintje" is just as "Browny (the bear)" the small brown one. We diminuish with "-je" or "-tje" dependang on the last noun or vocal. It would be SSje" ans "Nancytje" even "Dumplingtje"
Smart Set commented on 07.14.05
And I'm off to clear up the kitchen. G'night all!
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
Just a touch....!!I am going to take an annual to read in bed now! Nice to be reminded - it's been a while since I have even looked at them!
Smart Set commented on 07.14.05
wim, I guess "Bruintje" just means "brown", does it?
Smart Set commented on 07.14.05
Rex and Reggie - bit close to Ron and Reggie, eh?
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
Having perused the site further - I am wrong about the 2 ways to read - there are 4!!!
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
Very true! Rex and Reggie feature on cover 1962 (not one that I own, sadly). Bruintje? Not quite the same ring to it...
wim commented on 07.14.05
well, make that "knocking"
Smart Set commented on 07.14.05
It was Rudolph who pulled Santa's sleigh. And me who pulled Nancy's leg.
wim commented on 07.14.05
if my memory still functions, without Alois knicking, it was a song. Just ask SS, he knows most of those things
Smart Set commented on 07.14.05
wim, in Holland he was Bruintje Beer.
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
There was a reindeer called Rupert!? Rupert the Bear is brilliant! They still produce an annual to this day. The stories are written in full prose but also in summary rhyming couplets under the pictures. Some of the earlier stories are highly politically incorrect but still very charming nonetheless.
wim commented on 07.14.05
the rednosed soandso
wim commented on 07.14.05
the only Rupert I know is the one pulling santaclaus's sledge
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
Check out SS's link below.
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
Rupert the Bear is a popular (and very longstanding - created in 1920) story cartoon for children. No exposure in Belgium at all?
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
Under the Relatively Rupert section.
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.14.05
Wearing my muffins??!! No - not alive in 1969. Born in '74! It was my grandmother's Rupert Annual that I used to read when I stayed over as a child. She gave me it when I started collecting Rupert stuff. What's the story with Rupert in Belgium, Wim?
Smart Set commented on 07.14.05
Where was the goats bit, ND?
wim commented on 07.13.05
so you were alive in 1969
wim commented on 07.13.05
What are Rupert, Reggie and Rex? Giant Rabbits wearing ND's muffins
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.13.05
I should point out that I didn;t know that by heart - consulted the relevant annual (1969). What a nice website! Thanks for the intro SS. I particulary like the attention to detail regarding the Wise Old Goats various arm ends.
Smart Set commented on 07.13.05
Brilliant stuff. And all in rhyme. Reggie and Rex the rabbit twins were white, so this figure could be the black rabbit of the family. Raggety rulz, though.
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.13.05
That was a story in my first ever Rupert annual. I have been collecting Rupert things ever since. he was a grumpy little sod to begin with.
"The spiky thing turns round and glares, "you pulled that tree down!" it declares. "My lovely nest! My comfy nook! It's finished, done for! Just you look!"" Ahhh, brilliant.
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.13.05
OH MY GOD!!!! That is my fave story ever - little twig man!!!!
I have just consulted my Rupert the Bear Dossier and there is an uncanny likeness to Rex the Rabbit....gone bad.
Smart Set commented on 07.13.05
Yeah. Frank the rabbit.
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.13.05
Looks like a character from Rupert the Bear. I am a HUGE fan of Rupert. In his yellow checked slacks. This little fella could easily be one of his standy up human style bunny friends.
Nancy Dumpling commented on 07.13.05
Oooh - that figure to the side!! I see it! It looks a bit Donnie Darko...spooky
Smart Set commented on 07.13.05
What do you reckon to the giant cat, ND?
Smart Set commented on 07.13.05
Is that a giant cat with a white bib standing at the end of the path?
Nancy Dumpling's Mum commented on 07.13.05
I'm sure he was a very nice chap, unlike this area!
Smart Set commented on 07.13.05
Hartcliffe, eh? I once knew a chap called Cliff Hart. He was an electron microscopist.
