LONDON (Reuters) - British attempts to storm the U.S. market have been doomed, from pop idol Robbie Williams's failure to conquer its charts to Marks & Spencer's underwear never getting off the ground. In fact, since the Beatles 40 years ago, the Dyson vacuum cleaner, a revolutionary British invention, has been a rare British success in the United States. It is now the brand leader and even this year's Oscars presenters will get a Dyson in their gift packages from the organizers on Sunday. British entrepreneur James Dyson said his vacuum cleaner's popularity was spread mainly through word of mouth, with 97 percent of sales made through personal recommendation. "That's just how it works. It is because people who buy the product and take it home, like it and Chinese whispers go around, to their friends, their mum, their relatives," he said. Dyson is now the brand leader in Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, with strong growth in Europe, Japan and Russia. Dysons differ from most conventional vacuum cleaners in that they do not use a dust bag but a plastic cylinder, a design that means suction does not decrease as dust is collected. The design has helped Dyson's annual profit race ahead in 2004 to 103 million pounds ($197 million), up 137 percent from 2003. In the United States it sold 891,000 units last year, giving Dyson a 21 percent market share, ahead of rival Hoover, according to NPD Houseworld Consumer Panel. Dyson took on the U.S. market two years ago and pitched his high-end product to retailer Best Buy, which agreed to sell it nationwide. Now the cleaners sell in Sears, Target, Costco, Home Depot, Linens 'n' Things, Bed, Bath and Beyond among many other North American retail outlets

Maybe someone threw up on it.

They haven't gone down, Christine. Au contraire, they are the UK's top vacuum cleaner company. I've no idea why that sign was thrown out in Acton.

I see there's another online company that went down. Threw their sign away and everything.
