It may just be a rebellious, nonconformist streak in me that makes me ignore the "point" recommendation/rule, and
I have included a few pointing children in some photos, but when on my own it's often impossible to operate my camera (it's not the compact kind) with one hand and get sharp shots, so I've never done the point myself.
FOD, the rule states "preferably" - it's not the mandatory "must". (Incidentally, the First Rule, "Must be a mattress", is itself flouted, surely, by bed bases and Sans Mattress inclusions).
I know Rebecca has argued that "the point" makes the pics "streetmattress pics" and not just pics of any old junk, but the fact that they are on this website means that they are, by definition, "streetmattress pics". Only when removed from their streetmattress context could the pics be confused, but does that matter?
I would suggest that pointing has a useful function when the mattress would otherwise be hard to spot in the photo, but I try to make my mattresses very obvious, so the hand would just spoil the composition, IMHO.
And FOD, you're right to assume I'm not the same person as psychobabble (our styles are very different, surely?), and I've no idea why he/she doesn't favour the point.
