bitterns and herons are the same family. at first when i saw these birds that was what i thought they were. they looked like an American Bittern i'd seen in the past.

So that's settled, then. The title needs changing now. I've never seen a bittern, but I've always thought they were fascinating birds.

The ones in the middle are pidgeons...in case you were wondering.

I think you're right SS. My research shows they are Black-crowned Night Herons (Nycticorax nycticorax). Wondering if the one in back is possibly a female. There were three pairs in the parking lot.

Smart Set commented on 07.12.07
In fact, the more I look at it, the more I'm convinced that the one at the back is a juvenile black-crowned night-heron. Makes sense that it would be with its parent.

Smart Set commented on 07.12.07
But I think the one in front is a black-crowned night-heron.

Smart Set commented on 07.12.07
I think the one at the back is a female or a juvenile.

this is not the Botaurus Stellaris, SE, lost in the UK, but the Botaurus Lentiginosus, a bird in good conditions in the US of A

Sleepeasy commented on 07.11.07
Duh. Didn't spot that. But are they both bitterns?

wim commented on 07.11.07
stern?

Smart Set commented on 07.11.07
SE, the clue is in the title.

Amazing wildlife. I recognise the pigeons, but what are the two birds at the front and at the back? The one at the front looks like a penguin on stilts.

reserved between 16 and 15, a place for birds. Used to be a category I think
