I may have discovered the source of Acton's abandoned mattresses. There is a particular place which has a steady supply of mattresses - the first time I photographed one there was #8579. See the big "X marks the spot" door in that pic? Today there were no matts outside so I peeped through the "keyhole" (actually the square hole by the door catch) and saw this big pile lurking in a vast, ill-lit underground storage area. The matts in my previous pic "Subterraneans" are somewhere behind these, too. It seems that someone (or something!) is storing these matts up and releasing them one or two at a time. On the other hand, these all look rather clean examples, so perhaps they are just being saved for rehoming or recycling.

I hadn't heard of this, but it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Maybe it's part of the Mattress Rehabilitation Program (MRP) of the UK. I read about it in National Geographic (I think). They release them when they're rehabilitated and ready to go; when they know they can make it on their own. Unfortunately, the article stated, many mats are being released that simply aren't ready to go yet (a case of too many matts, too little space) so 2006 funding of the MRP is in question right now. Glad you asked!
