| I'm fairly certain that this is the first mattress pic of mine which includes one of Acton's churches. The end of the white building is a popular mattress spot (e.g. #6732) but for the first time we are looking up the back alley instead of down it. |

It first came to britain when the vikings invaded.The north of england spelt it kirk.In the south they talked Old English and spelt it cirice, though everyone pronounced it kirk.The word 'ham' is Saxon for township or settlement.After the norman conquest, the French had trouble pronouncing the word kirk, or cirice, so this was softened to the word chireche, and eventually church.Preston was originally called priests'town....Hope I didn't bore you too much with that one Wim, I can't remember writing it, but I was only 11, and I presume it's factual.Hope this answers your question. |

I don't think other religions use the word "church", do they? Rather temples or mosques. |
