As Poor as a Church Matt - 10.18.05
submitter: Smart Set
location:Acton, London, UK
I'm fairly certain that this is the first mattress pic of mine which includes one of Acton's churches. The end of the white building is a popular mattress spot (e.g. #6732) but for the first time we are looking up the back alley instead of down it.

Thanks FOD, I never get bored with language and its origins, "ham" could be the same as our "heim" your "home"

Hello, Wim.Here is an extract from my old goegraphy exercise book which I dug out of the loft when I moved house the other week:...I live in Kirkham, near Preston, Lancashire. The word kirk comes from kyriakon doma which is Greek for house of the lord. It first came to britain when the vikings invaded. The north of england spelt it kirk.In the south they talked Old English and spelt it cirice, though everyone pronounced it kirk. The word 'ham' is Saxon for township or settlement. After the norman conquest, the French had trouble pronouncing the word kirk, or cirice, so this was softened to the word chireche, and eventually church.Preston was originally called priests'town....Hope I didn't bore you too much with that one Wim, I can't remember writing it, but I was only 11, and I presume it's factual.Hope this answers your question.

In a pure etymologist way I wonder if "kerk" or "church" comes from "circle" hence "group" not in as much the buildin, but the institution. Any suggestions?

They're the various denominations of Christianity. I don't think other religions use the word "church", do they? Rather temples or mosques.

come to think of it, I have several churches, not only in Stokkem but also in Brussels, some are "de milo's"

wim commented on 10.19.05
Are they from the same religion?

Smart Set commented on 10.19.05
Hi, wim. Yes, it's surprising that the churches have not featured more often. There are at least eight that I can think of.

You forgot to add 'patience' Chaf, while Dad takes endless shots... "Just one more!"

Hi SS, we only have one church and you have seen it on a lot of our pictures, but ours has a pointed tower

Smart Set commented on 10.19.05
Nowadays it's more like an 'Old Mattress Town'.

You have made Acton look like an old 'Market Town' which I guess it once was!

It's good to see the kids involved. Well rounded is a positive aspect to have...the arts, urban blight, geography...
