These shots span just two minutes - the last in the life of a streetmattress. After taking pic #1 I had gone over to get a side view of the mattress and base when suddenly the quiet street was filled with a clanking, wheezing, red monster. It stopped alongside my subject, and a man unceremoniously slung the poor matt in, and then the base, which was devoured with a sickening crunch. When he'd done this, he nodded to me and said: "All right, mate?" I moved in and got a shot of the poor dead matt as the truck roared triumphantly off. I must confess I felt a bit shocked by the brutality of what I'd witnessed, but pleased to have documented it.

Some more than others.

There is a sort of personal feeling one gets from a mattress...it really is the most intimate of furniture.

Thanks, Rebecca. It was the suddenness of the matt's demise that was a bit shocking; I mean, I've come to think of these streetmattresses as sentient beings. And the street was so quiet before - just me and the matt. And when the truck stopped, the inevitability of what was going to happen to the mattress...it was like witnessing an execution!

As the king of the pride licks the blood from his chops as the buzzards and hyenas come to strip the carcass clean, he looks up and says "All right, mate?"...then saunters off into the night.

Great montage. I've always wished I could catch one of these moments, but no such luck. I can only imagine that it was like witnessing a pride of lions taking down a Thompson's Gazelle on the wide plains of the Kalahari.
