The Great Escape. - 02.03.06
submitter: Jaak Graaf van Stokkem
location:Belgian-Netherlands Borderline
After a long matpic silence: On a sunday afternoon, bringing Calvin ( our grandchild) home after a walk, a car was passing us with great speed. My wife says there goes an "Olenjer" with 3 mats in his trunk, to late. But then I did running home to fetch my car, a camera without zoom and then hurry hurry to the ferryboat.
Just in time to make a pic form the car with 3 mats on his territory.

On Google StreetView a man wearing shorts stands waiting on the Dutch side. His face is blurred. Is it you, Wim?

Jaak Graaf van Stokkem commented on 02.09.06
Wim, there are borderliners and borderliners.

wim commented on 02.09.06
actually I hope I am not, as you know I am following a course in forensics and both of us better not be borderliners. As for your ancestors and mine, me too I am glad they crossed several borders before ending up in stokkem, the place to be.

Jaak Graaf van Stokkem commented on 02.09.06
Wim, you're right, I'm glad that my father did crossed a lot of borders and finaly settled down in Stokkem.

wim commented on 02.08.06
jaak has a borderline syndrome

Smart Set commented on 02.08.06
Arf, arf!

Jaak Graaf van Stokkem commented on 02.08.06
SS when you look in the white car parked on the other side there is a border collie inside.

wim commented on 02.08.06
it makes two of a kind

Jaak Graaf van Stokkem commented on 02.08.06
Thank's Wim so it's good to know your not alone.......

wim commented on 02.08.06
jaak, we all know you are crazy

Smart Set commented on 02.08.06
Heroic efforts, Jaak! I notice that your recent pics have all had borders, but this is the first one where a border is the subject as well.

wim commented on 02.08.06
it depends where you have to go.The next bridge is to the left after 15 kilometers of river (22 on the road) and to the right after 10 kilometers of river (30 on the road). There are 2 nce villages earby on the dutch side "sittard" and "geleen",and a big chemical plant in "stein" named "DSM". problem with the ferry is that it does not function all day, with changing ours winter and summer and it only works if there is enough water. In summer the river can be too dry, in winter it floods and the water comes easily to the yellow sign on the right side of the picture

Jaak Graaf van Stokkem commented on 02.08.06
SS I only ran to fetch my car.

Jaak Graaf van Stokkem commented on 02.08.06
SS I had to passe a lot of cars waiting for the ferry returning. I almost drove in the MAAS then quickly took the pic, I think the people in the cars that I passed must have think, what's that crazy guy doing?

Smart Set commented on 02.08.06
So, mattematicians, using this data, can we calculate how fast Jaak ran?

Smart Set commented on 02.08.06
Is the ferry a good short cut?

wim commented on 02.08.06
from where jaak took the picture to Stokkem is about 5 yards; in Stokkemwe pretend the ferry crosses to "stokkem", but apparently it touches belgian soil in "Meeswijk". From the ferry to the center of Stokkem is more ore less 2kilometers, at the utmost

Smart Set commented on 02.08.06
I was going to ask about those things. How far is spot from Stokkem? The "tilt" is the crazy angle of the pic.

wim commented on 02.08.06
I don't know what you mean by "tilt", but a thing of interest are the "forks" of the local shooting guild on the left side of the picture

Smart Set commented on 02.08.06
That doesn't answer my question, Jaak. I meant was the tilt deliberate?

Jaak Graaf van Stokkem commented on 02.08.06
SS sometimes Belgium is bigger, then the Netherlands are bigger.Stephen I was in Belgium. Chaf,no duty on the mat, the middle of the MAAS is dutyfree.

Chaf commented on 02.08.06
Was there any duty on the mattress?

stephen commented on 02.08.06
so what country were you in?

Vogon3 commented on 02.08.06
and i like the raised tile effect

Smart Set commented on 02.07.06
Is that "Dutch angle" deliberate, Jaak?

Jaak Graaf van Stokkem commented on 02.07.06
Art,the borderline is always in the middle but can change with the course of the "MAAS".

ART commented on 02.07.06
mmm, no I understand, that wasn't supposed to be a question-mark hé?

ART commented on 02.07.06
yep somewhere in the middle is the borderline, I know a guy who draws those lines for the government

Jaak Graaf van Stokkem commented on 02.07.06
Art, it's the borderline ?

ART commented on 02.07.06
this one is listed under Netherlands, and indeed, I thing he's far enough to say he's on Dutch terratory. What are those tiny white wales crossing the picture? My gps-navigation tells me this is a ferryboat
